Boys' woes continue at AGWSR, 55-39

The struggle to win goes on for the Trojans. A poor first half of shooting Jan. 6 in Ackley doomed South Tama as AGWSR collected its sixth win of the season against three losses, 55-39.

"In the first half, we couldn't make a basket. In the second half, we clearly played much better. You have to play both halves that way, and they made more baskets than we did," said head coach Lonnie Hammond after the loss.

The Trojans trailed after one, 16-6, and at the half, 29-10.

After falling behind by 21 at the beginning of the third, consecutive three's by Ricky Hopper and Jose Fonseca made it a 15-point differential and the Trojans had some life back.

South Tama could only manage to play even the rest of the way with the Cougars. It was 42-23 at the end of the third period.

Caleb Davenport, Daryl Bidwell and Sam Kuhter kept pace in the fourth with AGWSR. A three by Austin Lowe and a freethrow by Kyle Stephenson would get it to 52-36.

The closest STC would make it in the second half came with 48 seconds to go when Dwayne Johnson connected on an NBA-three to get the Trojans within 14, 53-29.

A final basket by Ian Fryslie made the final score 55-39 in favor of the Cougars.

"We can't afford to get behind a lot," noted Hammond. "It's tough to come back. To the kids' credit, we came out in the second half and we battled and we played hard all the way to the end. That's a testament to the kids."

Hammond saw some things he liked.

"We continue to get better. We rebounded much better tonight. As a team, we held Ackley to below their season average tonight, and we held their leading scorer (Josh Bagley) to below half (his average). We played decent enough defense, but our offense disappeared in the first half."

Hammond remains optimistic. "We haven't played a complete game yet. And when that happens, good things will happen."

South Tama now stands 0-10, 0-7 for the season. he Trojans hosted Grundy Center Jan. 10.
