Calls for more education reform input

November 24, 2011
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

Dear Editor,

Great local schools are what our kids deserve and it will help to bring good lasting jobs to Iowa.

Recently in Tama, La Porte City, and Marshalltown, I met with Iowans to explore ways to help our local students become the best they can be. Thanks to all the parents, teachers, and school administrators who attended these lively discussions.

A number of promising ideas were put forth. They included revamping the school schedule and moving to yearlong school. There was also general agreement that students learning to become teachers spend more time in school classrooms before taking on the challenge of actually running a classroom.

I'll take what I learned in Tama, La Porte City, and Marshalltown with me to Des Moines when the 2012 session of the Iowa Legislature begins in January.

If you have thoughts on education reform, I'd like to hear them. You can email me at or call me at home, 641-483-2383
