IOWA FALLS The Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) Board of Directors accepted a $25,000 grant from the Iowa Falls City Council when it met this week in Iowa Falls. The grant will be used for improvements to the Ellsworth Equestrian Center, specifically the addition of gravel to a 50'x340' outdoor parking area and electrical hookups for visitors' campers and RVs parked at the Equestrian Center.
Chris Duree, IVCCD Chancellor, noted that the grant funds are generated through a hotel/motel tax, and that the project was submitted by Ellsworth Community College representatives to the Iowa Falls Hotel/Motel Tax Funding Advisory Board, which approved the proposal. "The College is very appreciative of this funding," said Duree.
Several donations were also accepted by the Board from Swift and Company and UFCW Local 1149 ($1,000 for the 2012 Transition Conference), Pam Swarts (a "Journals of Jean Seberg" movie), Doug West (a framed Jean Seberg print), Nancy Adams (vintage barn boards for use at the Orpheum Theater Center), and Church Women United ($1,200 to the Iowa Falls GED and ESL programs).
In other matters, the IVCCD Board: approved a resolution for substantial completion of construction of the new College Suites building at Ellsworth Community College; renewed a three-year contract with Blackboard Connect for software used by IVCCD as its emergency notification system to students and staff; approved agreements to provide college-level instruction to North Mahaska, CAL, BGM and Grinnell-Newburg School Districts; approved an agreement for natural gas services with Constellation NewEnergy (anticipated to save the District approximately $35,000 annually); and authorized a final payment of $106,000 to Marsden Holding in settlement of the District's custodial contract.
In his comments to the Board, Duree noted that "good things are happening" at Iowa Valley, Ellsworth and Marshalltown. He highlighted the work of the Administrative Leadership Team, the District's involvement in the Business & Education Alliance project in Marshall County, his recent focus group conversations with students at ECC in Iowa Falls, and a visit to Lennox Industries to discuss economic development initiatives.
The next regular meeting of the IVCCD Board of Directors will be at 4 pm on Wednesday, Dec. 14, in the IVCCD Administrative Office board room at 3702 S. Center St. in Marshalltown.
