According to South Tama officials, two students do not meet any of the good cause definitions and have been attending a different school district since pre school. Preschool students are not required to file open enrollment paperwork, but K-12 students are required to do so.
It was reported the East Marshall's School Board approved these requests without meeting the good cause deadlines.
The Iowa Department of Education has outlined the appeal process for these open enrollment requests.
It will not change the current placement of the child, but will allow the district the potential to recover the lost state aid. The STC Board voted 5-0 with members Jackie Dvorak, Ron Hala, Mark McFate, Anne Michael and Micelle Yuska voting in favor to file the appeal to get the money returned.
Another open enrollment request was denied. This application was filed late and does not meet the definition of good cause. The board does not have the legal authority to approve this request.
As a result, the board voted to deny a request for open enrollment due to the lack of good cause.
Another open enrollment request was approved. The open enrollment requests for two other students were filed late but do meet the definition of good cause.
The board does have the legal authority and voted to approve this request.
