Frederick "Fred" J. Wyatt, age 88 of Melbourne, passed away Saturday, October 15, 2011 at Villa del Sol while under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 19, at Pursel Davis Funeral and Cremation Care. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 Tuesday, October 18 at the funeral home. Interment will be in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Pursel Davis Funeral and Cremation Care is entrusted with arrangements.
Fred was born to John Elliot Wyatt and Mary Lena Zeisneiss on January 2, 1923, in Washington Township in Marshall County, Iowa. He graduated from LaMoille High School in 1940 and enlisted in the US Navy Air Corps. His overseas duty was spent in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he flew in P.B.M.'s searching for enemy submarines and flying convoy coverage. Fred was united in married to Janice Beth Dickenson on August 27, 1944 in Union, Iowa. He farmed for 30 years and retired in 1977 when they moved to Melbourne, Iowa. They celebrated 67 years of marriage.
Fred was an avid fisherman and fished in lakes and waters from Canada to Mexico and Hawaii. Fred believed in the old adage "Everyday spent fishing adds one day to your life." They wintered in Texas for 20 years. Fred and Janice liked to travel and visited every state and many overseas countries.
Fred belonged to the American Legion Post #46 in Marshalltown for 66 years, 50 Plus Club in Melbourne and Melbourne Coffee Groups.
Fred is survived by his wife of 67 years, Janice, son, Scott F. Wyatt of Bemidji, MN, daughters, Sheryl M. (Dallas) Hotchkiss of Toledo, IA, Sandy S. Wyatt of Marshalltown, grandson, Tyler J. (Ryan) Strunk of Muskogee, OK, great-grandson, Wyatt J. Strunk of Muskogee, OK and a great-grandson, Zane, soon to be born in Muskogee, OK.
Fred was proceeded in death by his parents and brother, Herb.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established.
