8th grade Trojans take down rival Grinnell

TOLEDO CHRONICLE- South Tama hosted the Grinnell Tigers on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. Bailey Chyma returned the opening kickoff 16 yards for the Trojans. South Tama drove 79 yards with runs from Chyma totaling 11 yards, Peyton Craun 55 yards and a 13-yard reception from Colson Frakes to Craun, but a fumble on the 1-yard line turned the ball over. Tackling from Andrew Peters and Craun, Mitch Thede and Craun, Chyma and Craun, and Bryce Ellenbecker ended the 1st quarter with a score of 0-0.

The 2nd quarter started with a Craun interception returned 56 yards for a Trojan touchdown. South Tama was stopped short on the 2-point conversion leaving the score 6-0. Ruben Garcia kicked off to Grinnell. The Tigers answered four downs later with a touchdown and an unsuccessful conversion, matching the score 6-6. After good field position from a kickoff penalty out of bounds, the Trojans could not move the ball. Frakes punted to Grinnell after a series of downs. Justin Suchanek and Craun tackled the returner, and South Tama quickly took possession after stops from Nathan McAdoo, Craun and Thede, and Suchanek and Garcia. After no punt return and small yardage gained, Frakes again punted to the Tigers with no return. On 1st down, Suchanek caused the Grinnell ball carrier to fumble, and Diego Murillo recovered the football for the Trojans shortly before the end of the 2nd quarter. The Tigers held South Tama to a half-time score of 6-6.

Garcia provided the opening kickoff to Grinnell the start of the 3rd quarter. The Tigers were driving but tackling on the drive from Suchanek, Jaret Probasco, Edwin Youngbear, Peters, Craun/Ellenbecker/Dylan Cronk and Probasco, Suchanek, Craun and Thede, Probasco and Chyma, Probasco and Peters, Suchanek, Craun and Garcia, Suchanek, Craun, and Chyma gave control back to the Trojans. A Frakes 82-yard touchdown pass completion to Suchanek on 3rd down, and a successful 2-point conversion by Chyma made the score 14-6. After a Garcia kick and stops by Justice Dunning/Craun and Probasco, Craun, Garcia/Probasco and Craun, Chyma, and Craun brought the end of the 3rd quarter.

Probasco, Peters/Craun and Chyma, Chyma and Ellenbecker, and Suchanek tackles, followed by an incomplete pass gave the ball over on downs back to South Tama. On the ensuing play, Craun ran 61 yards for a Trojan touchdown. The 2-point conversion attempt was no good leaving the score 20-6. Garcia kicked off to Grinnell. Stops by Suchanek, Ellenbecker, Suchanek/ Probasco and Murillo, Garcia and Dakota Vodochodsky, and Lane Votrobeck and two incomplete passes gave South Tama the ball. The Trojan drive led by Frakes’ pass completions of 18 yards to Craun, another 7 yards to Craun, and 7 yards to Chyma fell short of a score. Grinnell took over on downs for one last play stopped by Votrobeck.

South Tama Trojans beat the Grinnell Tigers by a final score of 20-6. Coach Steve Chyma said, “The boys knew they were in for a battle. We started off slow, but the boys came out in the second half and proved that they wanted the ball game. They came together as a team, stepped up their play, took control and won that game.”
