October 23, 2011
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald
TOLEDO CHRONICLE-Jeffrey Copeland was shopping at a flea market when he stumbled upon an old suitcase full of love letters. Those letters became the subject of a book later written by Copeland, Inman’s War. The book is a wonderful story of Inman Perkins, raised in Iowa, a graduate of the University of Iowa and a soldier who served in WWII. Inman’s War is the story of two wars; World War II and racism.

TheTama-Toledo AAUW is pleased to be hosting a presentation put on by Copeland, professor of English at the University of Northern Iowa, author and speaker.

He will begin his talk at the Toledo Library at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24.

Through Inman, Copeland gives us a chance to learn about an untold part of African American history. The book is based on the letters exchanged between Inman Perkins and his fiance who later became his wife and brings laughter, tears, joy, pride, patriotism, anger, love and friendship to the reader.

His book was nominated for the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the Jefferson Cup Award, the Carter G. Woodson Award, the Orbis Pictus Award, and is on the American Library Association's Notable Books List.

He will be sharing a power point presentation and telling the story of how he came to know Inman Perkins, a man of valor and courage. Copeland will be available at 6 p.m. for an author book signing. Treats will be provided.
