Facing last years state champion is always a challenge. Facing last years champions who also have a record of 59 wins and two losses over the past six years is even more challenging.
Solon took the kickoff and returned it to their own 47. A drive to the Trojan 30 followed by a 30 yard rush and the Spartans got on the board first with just over a minute and a half off the first quarter clock. The extra point attempt was no good setting the score at 6-0.
The Trojans first posession stalled on the 40 yard line and ended in a punt to the Spartan 22. Fortunately, the Trojan defense returned the favor forcing the Spartans to also punt when they faced a fourth and 10.
This time, the Trojans drove past the Spartan defense and Kyle Stepehnson was able to rush the ball across from the 17 yard line for the Trojans first touchdown. An extra point kick by Jose Fonseca and the Trojans would take the lead, 7-6. Unfortunately, this lead was all too brief and would be the last the Trojans would have.
On the kickoff return, Spartan Jordan Weimer rushed the ball for an 80 yard touchdown. After a two point conversion, the Spartans led 14-7.
Three more times in the first half, the Trojan offense would be unable to get past the Spartans. And three more times, the Spartans would score. At the end of the half, the score was Spartans 35, Trojans 7.
At the beginning of the second half, the Spartans would get one more touchdown off an interception makng it Trojans 7, Spartans 42. With a 35 point lead, the continuous clock rule went into effect with 8:20 left in the third quarter.
The Trojans would score twice more before the end of the game though. One touchdown at the end of the third quarter was the result of a bad snap by Solon on their own 16 yard line. The ball flew over their quarterback’s head and bounced into the end-zone. Daryl Bidwell wasted no time diving on top of it.
The final touchdown for the Trojans was late in the fourth when they took posession off of an interception by Kaleb Davenport on the Trojan 4 yard line. After a drive to the Solon 13 yard line, quarterback Sam Kuhter handed off to Tyler Waltz for a 13 yard rush. An extra point kick by Fonseca was good making the final score Trojans 20, Spartans 42.
The Trojans now hold a 2-4 record in regular season play. They take the field next when they travel to Washington for a 3A District 6 challenge on Friday. STC will meet the Demons coming off a 27-12 league win over Mt. Vernon. The Demons record now stands at 3-3.
