The mission and future of our Red Cross

August 29, 2011
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald
Dear Editor,

The American Red Cross recently announced plans to streamline operations and cut costs to better serve the public. These changes include consolidating support services and smaller chapters across the nation. Our local Iowa Rivers Chapter serving five counties in central Iowa is one of seven chapters in Iowa to experience this consolidation.

As Iowa Rivers Chapter community board members, we understand the Red Cross national decision to make changes to ensure future stability and continuation of the mission. However, we are saddened to learn of the immediate impact to the Iowa Rivers Chapter and our three staff members.

It is important for our local volunteers and community supporters to know that the Iowa Rivers Chapter has been a well run chapter with a strong financial performance. We are blessed to have had the 20-year leadership of Mary Dooley, our Chapter Executive. Staff members Shirley Davis and Kimberly Trowbridge have also contributed greatly to our chapter through their dedication and professionalism.

The true measure of success for the Iowa Rivers Chapter of the American Red Cross has been the tremendous support from the residents and businesses in Marshall, Tama, Hardin, Poweshiek and Jasper counties. Our volunteers and contributors have been there in times of need and stood ready to respond. While change occurs, one thing remains constant-the need to continue our support for the mission of the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross is where people mobilize to help their neighbors—across the street, across the country, and across the world. The current Red Cross restructuring in Iowa will provide for centralization of services into the state office in Des Moines serving Greater Iowa. The Marshalltown office will be open on a modified schedule and we will soon have the support of a Chapter Support Officer for our area to address needs and concerns.

Please join us in expressing appreciation to our local staff who have been faithful to the mission of the Red Cross and our community. A “Recognition Coffee” will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 31 from 3-5 p.m. at the Red Cross Office in Marshalltown.
