August 26, 2011
From: ROBIN ANCTIL, Director of Marketing, IVCCD
TAMA NEWS-HERALD- MARSHALLTOWN – Several personnel matters came before the Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) Board of Directors this month, including the hiring of custodial/maintenance employees, the termination of a faculty contract, and several personnel policy changes.

Chris Duree, IVCCD Chancellor, noted that the District has moved away from contracted custodial / maintenance services to improve services and gain cost efficiency, and has hired its own plant services staff. Most of the new employees have been hired under the direction of Brett Purvis, Director of Plant Services, but a few more positions remain to be filled. Dr. Duree noted that, so far, the projected budget savings are right on track.

In other personnel matters, the Board approved termination of the employment and teaching contract of Frank Roessler, MCC physics professor, effective May 10. Dr. Duree noted that this is the last of the staff reductions that were made last spring in an effort to balance the District’s budgets.

Also related to personnel, the Board reviewed recommendations for several personnel-related policy and policy guideline changes; the policy change will be acted upon at the September meeting.

Three Iowa Jobs Training Agreements were approved by the Board to provide training to the employees of area businesses.

A $20,000 agreement with ASI Sign Systems of Grinnell will train 35 employees in marketing and design, safety, computers, process improvement, and product and business management.

A $20,000 agreement with D&B Agro Systems of Hubbard will train 18 employees in safety, welding, trying, electrical and AutoCad. A $20,000 agreement with Interface Sealing Solutions of Marshalltown will train 60 employees in computers, lean, measurement tools, safety, statistical process control, Auditor TS, blueprint reading, and problem-solving.

The IVCCD Board approved an agreement with Scott and Debra Hoover of Iowa Falls whereby the ECC construction technology program students will build a room and entry addition to the Hoover’s existing ranch home as a residential construction project for 2011-2012. It was noted by Dr. Duree that the 1,400 square foot project is large, and that it’s a good fit for the ECC construction technology program.

Two separate agreements were approved between the community college district and Youth For Understanding, an international exchange student program. Marshalltown Community College is entering its 19th year with YFU, and will be hosting eight students this year. Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls is entering its first year with YFU, and will be hosting five students this year.

Several donations were accepted by the Board from Nancy Adams, Beth Burkemper, Central Iowa Art Association, Dr. Franco Chua, Robert Gantz, the Hawthorne Club, Karen Lischer, Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center, the Marshalltown Morning Optimist Club, Marshalltown Noon Kiwanis Club, Martha-Ellen Tye Foundation, the Melbourne Fortnightly Club, Mark and Fauna Nord, Henry and Margot Schmid, Kenny Selvog, Linda York, and Liz Zuercher. Thirteen of the donations were to the Orpheum Theater Center and its projects/programs, three were to the Iowa Valley Continuing Education 2012 Transition Conference, one was to Marshalltown Community College, and was was to the IVCE Fam-ercise field trip at Green Castle Recreation Area.

In other matters, the Board: approved a memorandum of understanding with One Source Training Iowa and the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees to coordinate statewide trainings with all of Iowa’s community colleges (a program that generated $28,000 for IVCCD last year); approved fee changes (effective Spring 2012) for dental assisting, medical assisting, and COMPASS testing; approved an agreement with McFarland Clinic to provide nursing services for students at Ellsworth Community College; approved membership dues and athletic program fees with the Iowa Community College Athletic Association; and approved athletic schedules for MCC soccer, cross country and volleyball.
