Trial By Jury returns to the Iowa State Fair

August 16, 2011
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald
tamatoledonews.com - DES MOINES (SPECIAL) - Visitors to the Iowa State Fair will have a chance to learn about the judicial system and issue verdicts in mock cases at “Trial by Jury.” The event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m at the air-conditioned Jacobson Exhibition Centerh through August 20.

Jurors will be selected from those attending each event. They will hear the attorneys argue their case during opening and closing statements, listen to the testimony of witnesses and follow the judge’s instructions to render a verdict.

Two Supreme Court Justices, a Judge from the Iowa Court of Appeals, and district court judges will preside over cases and real attorneys will argue the cases each night. A question and answer period will follow each mock trial, allowing fair goers to ask the attorneys, judges and court reporters about the case or any other questions they have about the legal system.

The event is sponsored by the Iowa State Bar Association as a way to educate Iowans about the judicial system and to encourage Iowans’ participation through jury service.

The system handled 38,694 civil cases in Iowa last year, a 30 percent increase since 2002. The overwhelming majority were settled out of court. Still, 196 cases ended in jury verdicts while 2,716 cases were decided in non-jury trials.
