TAMA NEWS-HERALD - King Tower Cafe, on Tama’s east side, has closed. A notice posted on the doors of the long-time Tama business attributes the closing to the bypass of the business by the U. S. Highway 30 Expressway.
The restaurant, part of a complex known as the King Tower One Stop, was opened by the late Wes and Irene Mansfield in 1937 along the route of U.S. 30 and the Lincoln Highway. At one time it consisted of a service station-truck stop, tourist cabins, a mobile home park and offered wrecker service in addition to the 24-hour cafe.
Several other businesses along the U.S. 30 route have been shuttered since the November, 2010, opening of the Expressway. At least some of the closinga are not directly related to the rerouting of U.S. 30.
Closed recently on what is now Business Route 30 are Venture Lanes, Lincoln Bridge Inn motel, Granny’s Family Restaurant and Lounge and Peony Chinese Restaurant.
The Budget Inn motel was closed earlier and remains so.
