Trojans fall 13-2 in five innings

The STC Trojan varsity softball team dropped a 13-2 decision to the visitors from Oskaloosa Wednesday, June 15, in a Little Hawkeye Conference venue.

Starting for the visitors were: Shawni Wills, center field; MacKenzie Gott, pitcher; Jacque Terrell, third base; Dana VanRenterghem, catcher; Mackenzie McGraw, shortstop; Kesley Kollasch, second base; Maddi Ewing, right field; Kristelle Slycord, first base and Kailyn Risher, left field.

Starting for the Trojans were: Katelyn Behounek, second base; Trisha Walz, third base; Kourtne Smith, pitcher; Samantha Holtz, left field; Hailee Weiss, shortstop; Jade Rohach, center field; Samantha Magpie, first base; Sarah Holtz, designated hitter for Tori Appelgate, right field; Riley Craun, catcher.

4-0 Start

Osky opened with a four-run turn at bat. Smith struck out Wills, then Gott hit an extra-base single. Gott stole third and Terrell made safe to first on an infield ground ball. Terrell stole second and Van Renterghem brought in Gott from third for a 1-0 lead. McGraw hit a ground ball to load the bases. Kollasch brought in one run and Ewing followed with two more for a 4-0 lead. Ewing was thrown out trying to steal her way to third.

4 Run Second

Osky followed with a four-run top of the second to stretch their lead to 8-0. Slycord started with a single and Risher bunted safely. Smith struck out Wills again. Gott doubled to center field for a 5-0 lead. Terrell hit a fly ball to center field and was safe for an RBI. Gott came in on a passed ball and McGraw earned an RBI with a sacrifice infield ball. Kollasch was thrown out at first to end Osky?s turn at bat leading 8-0.

STC got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Rohach ground out and Magpie singled. Samantha Holtz made it to first and she and Magpie executed a double steal, resulting in one run. Craun walked and Behounek struck out for an 8-1 game.

Three more runs came across for Osky in the top of the third inning, flirting with the 10-run rule. Ewing and Slycord both walked and Risher bunted to load the bases. Smith got her third straight strike out over Wills. Gott was out on an infield fly ball. Terrell hit a shot up the middle, bringing all the runners in for an 11-1 lead and made her way to third on the play. VanRenterghem walked and McGraw hit safely for an RBI. Kollasch hit to Walz at third and was thrown out at first for the 12-1 score.

Walz struck out in the top of the third and Smith reached first on a single. Smith stole second as Samantha Holtz struck out. Weiss brought Smith in with a single to center field. Rohach struck out for the third out, trailing 12-2.

The visitors added an insurance run in the top of the fourth inning. Ewing flew out and Slycord was thrown out at first. Risher walked, and stole her way to third with Tomlin at the plate. Tomlin brought Risher in for an RBI, but was thrown out trying for third on the hit for a 13-2 lead.

Neither team was able to score in the fifth inning and the game was called after five innings by virtue of the 10-run rule. The final score being Oskaloosa 13, STC 2.
