STC played host to Grinnell in the conference open for both teams. The game started under sunny skies, and mild temps and a light breeze. This was the best weather that the STC has played in so far. For the first few minutes both teams were just getting a feel for the game. Grinnell found the right combination at the 4 minute mark for a quick 1-0 lead. It was a nice cross that found a Grinnell player for a quick shot and beat the STC goalie Sam Earley. After this the STC defense of Brooke Dvorak, Amanda Husak, Chelsea Proffitt and Kylynn Steuhm played very solid defense, and anything that made it through was taken care of by Sam. STC had a nice attack in the 11th minute with a shot by STC forward Megan Wanatee. Jess Lisardia-Garcia was the other forward in the attack. Mid-field play of Hailee Weiss, Grace Kavalier, Sam Frundle, and Kate Behounek played solid soccer, and the game was up and down for the rest of the half. And this was how the half ended with Grinnell holding a 1-0 lead.
The start of the second half found us pressing forward to try to find the equalizer. In the 44th minute we were was awarded a free kick just outside the box. Chelsea had a nice kick that the Grinnell goalie made a good play on to keep us off the scoreboard. Megan had a could of good shots over the next few minutes along with Hailee. But it was not to be. Grinnell slowly took control of the tempo of the game, and at the 55 minute Grinnell had a good look that the STC goalie could not get to. Grinnell 2-0 at that point. STC did not give up, but could not find the right combo. Grinnell finished out the scoring at the 64th minute mark for a 3-0 lead. STC had one more chance on a corner in the 75th minute. Chelsea had a nice corner that dropped right in front of the Grinnell goal, but ST/EM could not get a foot on it, and Grinnell defense cleared it out of danger. And this is the way the game ended, with Grinnell winning 3-0.
Kensie Beckman, Arely Nunez and Araceli Angle contributed valuable minutes to the game. STC did not give up, and played hard the entire game. One of the biggest problems was that STC needs to work on controlling the 50-50 balls. STC was winning the ball, but were unable to control the ball after the win. STC ended up giving the ball right back, which is the last thing you want to do. Something that will be worked on in upcoming practices. I was very proud of the way the team played. Just need to continue to work on the things that can make this team a very good team.
We travel to Pella Christian next Tuesday, April 19, for their next contest. We are currently 1-3 and 0-1 in conference for the season.
