Boys soccer team opens season with Rebels

April 13, 2011
by coach Dave Chizek
first home game for STC as they faced the boys soccer team from Gladbrook/Reinbeck. Starters for the game were Dan Ahumada, Colton Quigley, Matt Evans, and Rick Hopper on the back line. Luis Perez was in as Goal keeper. Alex Martinez, Mason Taylor, Moises Fonseca, and Boston Dunning ran the mid field. Matt Upah and Jesus Castanon took the forward spots. Subs for the game were Mitch Knowles, Bruce Gjetley ,Eric Rodriges, Ben Packer, Jon Waseskuk, Miguel Guzman, and Brenden Cleppe. GR took the kickoff but we pressed them and kept the ball under control. Alex made a good pass to find Boston at goal mouth at the 10-minute mark but the shot was just wide on the left side. A very good opportunity for STC. Both teams exchanged mid field play over the next 20 minutes with G-R having a shot at the 18 and 25 min marks. Matt Upah and Jesus worked a good combination at the 27-minute mark but a good goalie stop kept the net clear. GR would get on the board with a corner kick at the 31st minute as we got tangled up trying to clear the cross but it found net. Score 0-1. Boston would get thru the back line again at the 37th minute but was stopped by solid goalie play. Jesus would follow that up with another good shot but was stopped by the goalie. The score at the end of the half was 1 - 0.

The second half started out strong for STC with Jesus getting a clean shot on goal in the first minute but shot just high. GR countered down the field with a quick break and a shot just out of reach of Luis for a score of 2 - 0. Much of the next 30 minutes went the same as the first half with both teams probing for shots but neither team bending. Ben Packer had a nice run and shot at the 65th minute but was gathered up by the goalie. GR was awarded a PK at the 38th minute for a handball violation which the shot was low and hard to the left and into the net. Score 3 - 0. That is how the final score stood. We played a lot better and communicated well. It will just take a few more practices to get the passes and first touches a bit cleaner.
