by coach Steve Bearden
The STC Girls Tennis Team continued their winning ways by defeating Marion High School on Monday, April 11 by a final score of 6-3. South Tama built an early lead by winning four of the six singles matches.

The Trojans started things off on the night with a big win at #1 Singles by Senior Brooke Upah. She jumped to an early lead over Marion’s Julia Bandfield 5-2, only to see her opponent battle back to tie things at 5-5. Upah steadied herself by serving well and managing the windy conditions to grab an 8-6 win.

STC Junior Kendra Bradley locked herself into a battle with Abby Hart at #2 Singles. Both players traded groundstrokes and fought the prevailing winds. Bradley’s composure under pressure proved to be the difference. She held serve at the end of the match to post a 9-7 deserving victory.

Kayla Schrader refused to give in to a difficult opponent in Marion’s Josiah Bandfield at #3 Singles. After getting down a break early, Schrader fought back and evened things to force a tiebreaker. The windy conditions again dictated how much each player could force the action. Schrader used a solid service return game and great footwork to ultimately secure the tiebreaker seven points to five to record a 9-8 (7-5) victory.

At #4 Singles, Senior Courtney Svacina matched up against Marion’s Stephanie Boesel. Relinquishing an early lead, Svacina saw herself on the short end of a 7-9 final score.

At #5 Singles, Natasha Musgrave found herself in a familiar position as she faced Jessica Thomas- a tiebreaker. In her first varsity match against Hudson, Natasha ended her match in a tiebreaker. Against Marion, the match came down to the same fate. Thomas converted the final points to snatch the victory. Musgrave fell by a score of 8-9 (4-7).

In the final singles match, #6 Sierra Old Bear had no trouble posting an 8-2 victory over Alyssa Jones. Old Bear used a pinpoint return of serve to put her opponent under pressure the entire match.

In doubles action, #1 Upah/Bradley took on Bandfield/Bandfield. The duo from STC got out to an early lead before seeing their opponents fight back. In a final tiebreaker, Upah/Bradley caught fire and ran off six straight points before posting a 7-1 win in the tiebreaker. Final score: 9-8 (7-1)in favor of the Trojans.

At #2 Doubles, Schrader/Svacina followed the fundamentals of doubles to grab an early lead against Hart/Loesel of Marion. The duo from STC easily won 8-2.

At #3 Doubles, Old Bear/Britney Burchard faced Marion’s Thomas-Sydney Larson. After getting down early, Old Bear/Burchard began a comeback before running out of time. The team from Marion grabbed the match 3-8.

In Junior Varsity Action, South Tama dominated the night and won 9-1. Emily Martin/Madison Baack got STC on the board early by beating M. Halverson/A. Jones 6-3. Blair Bridges/Aubree McFate kept the winning going by crushing A. Takes/K. Kiene 6-1. Leah Mann/Taylor Muhlstein posted an easy win over M. Robertson/J. Bartz 6-2.

Cruising to victory for the Trojans were Tori Applegate/Caitlyn Svacina by a score of 6-4 over K. Saba/H. Vanderlinden. Regina Balderas/Samantha Holtz overwhelmed H. Lappe/T Lipscomb 6-1. Hannah Brezina/Madison Baack teamed to defeat A. Unsen/C. Jones 6-3. Alexis Rosario/Jessica Schuur blitzed A. Lodwig/M. Loesel 6-1. Kayla Dye/Mollie Morgan trounced H. Lappe/T. Lipscomb 6-0.
