Letter to the Editor:
What a great season that the STC girls basketball team is having. They are currently 14-1 and ranked 9th in the state.
As a lifelong citizen of this community, STC graduate, and an overall STC sports fan, you can probably imagine my disappointment when the IGHSAU (Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union) Regional Pairings came out over this past weekend, that they did not have any home games for Regionals.
I have been in contact with the Assistant Director of the IGHSAU and asked how this could be. I believed that the girls had EARNED the right to play at home, at least the first two rounds. Instead, they get to play our rival, Grinnell, on THEIR home court first round.
This will be the girl’s third time playing Grinnell this year, second on their court. Any sports fan knows how rivalry games can go, especially on the road. Throw out the records. I asked the IGHSAU how this could come to be. The following is how they decide where the games are played for Regionals.
1) Ratings; 2)Geography; 3) they try to avoid last year’s 1st round match-ups and potential final round match-ups; 4)Win-Loss records; 5) Quality of competition played; 6) Site availability; 7) number of rated teams per region (try to have two whenever possible. 8)Quality of facilities for hosting. And finally the last one took me by surprise. It turns out that our beloved STC high school administrators DID NOT APPLY to host a Regional game, so they weren’t even considered as a possible host. So, despite the girls’ hard work, there was absolutely NO chance that they could have had a chance to play any regional game at home, because someone didn’t take the effort it takes to fill out the necessary form, which I’m sure would take all of what, 15-30 minutes, which is a stretch.
I’m sure other things are on administration’s minds, such as budget concerns, the meltdown of STC middle school academics, etc., but I’m sure that as well as the girls are doing, it would of packed the gym at home and brought in quite a bit of money for the athletic dept.
I know that you don’t get any of the money from admissions for regionals, which goes to IGHSAU, but if you put 250-300+ people in the STC roundhouse, I’m sure concessions would have done VERY WELL.
I hope that for the kids’ sake, the people in this community will make the trip to GRINNELL on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. and support the STC girls for all the HARD WORK that they (the kids) and the coaches have put in this year.
Hopefully, next year & future years, SOMEONE will fill out the paperwork so these kids at least get a chance to play the most important, post-season games, at home. Also, good luck to the STC boys basketball team (congrats on the lst win last night 1/25) & the STC wrestling team. People should be supporting these teams as well. GO TROJANS!
