Investing in Iowans is my focus for 2011

December 19, 2010
By State Senator Tom Rielly (D-Oskaloosa)
The most important thing the Legislature can do in the upcoming 2011 session is to invest in Iowans and strengthen Iowa’s economy. We will continue efforts that are working, such as building Iowa’s renewable energy economy. And we’ll fix what needs fixing, like shifting incentives to help Iowa’s Main Street businesses, rather than Wall Street businesses.

I’m eager to work with members of both parties and with incoming Governor Terry Branstad to make real progress on the challenges facing Iowa’s working families.

I had a chance to meet many of the newly elected legislators when they visited the Statehouse recently for an orientation session. It was an honor to welcome them to the Capitol and to share with them some of my experiences as a legislator during a panel discussion.

With session quickly approaching in January, we’ve put a great team in place in the Iowa Senate to continue our work on job creation, helping Iowans recover from the national economic recession and laying the foundation for a lasting recovery.

I’m glad to be continuing as chair of the Senate Transportation Committee because maintaining our roads is a key economic issue for all of Iowa. I’ll also serve as vice-chair for the Commerce Committee, and have been appointed to the Agriculture, Economic Growth and Local Government committees as well.

If you have ideas you’d like to share with me as I prepare to return to Des Moines on January 10, please call me at 641-673-0359 or e-mail me at tom.rielly@legis.state.ia.us.

State seeks Volunteer

candidates

Do you know an outstanding Iowa volunteer—somebody who has forever changed their community, the state, the nation, or the world with their volunteer service? Consider nominating them for the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame, which is the most prestigious state-level honor volunteers can receive.

Nominations must be received by January 7. Details and nomination materials are available at volunteeriowa.org/downloads/2011-halloffame.pdf. The Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame is coordinated by the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service and the Governor's Office. For more information, e-mail icvs@iowa.gov or call 1-800-308-5987.
