South Tama NHS students make blankets for cancer patients

TAMA NEWS-HERALD - STC National Honor Society members are kicking off a winter fundraiser in conjunction with the Knots of Love program. This year the NHS members will be making fleece tie blankets to donate to cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and radiation treatments at centers in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines.

Members have set a goal of making a total of 30 blankets! They need your help to achieve this goal. Please consider donating cash or fleece to help them. Creating a large tie blanket for an adult requires two pieces of fleece measuring two and a half yards long by 60” wide. One patterned piece of fleece and one coordinating solid color piece of fleece are commonly used. A small child’s blanket needs two pieces of fleece measuring two yards long by 60” wide.

NHS members will be accepting donations at the home varsity girls and boy’s basketball games on Jan. 14, Feb. 4, and Feb. 11. You can also donate at the varsity wrestling tournament on Dec. 11. Look for the table advertising Knots of Love in the commons area of the high school at these activities.

If you wish to donate a blanket made “in honor of” or “in memory of” someone special, you can donate either $35 or enough fleece to make an adult and/or child size blanket. NHS members will make the blanket and then sew on a personalized label.

Making a difference by giving back to the community is something NHS members pride themselves in doing. Each year members choose three or four focus areas in which to raise money and donate to worthy causes. Please support STC National Honor Society members by making a monetary donation in any amount or a donation of fleece at one of the upcoming activities. If you wish to donate, but are unable to attend a function, call Micki Behounek at (641) 484-4345 Ext. 123 or e-mail her at
