TOLEDO CHRONICLE - If all goes according to plan, the Toledo and Tama bypass route of the new U.S. 30 Expressway will open from the U.S. 63 interchange in Toledo west to the Deer Creek bridge tomorrow (Wednesday, Nov. 24.)

The Tama interchange, just northeast of the city, also is slated to open tomorrow.

That was the word from Tony Gustafson, assistant District 1 Department of transportation engineer, at a meeting concerning the project in Toledo on Tuesday, Nov. 16.

Through the winter months, the route west of Toledo from the Deer Creek bridge to the Expressway near the Meskwaki Bingo • Casino • Hotel complex will continue to be two-way or head-to-head traffic, Gustafson said.

He said a problem with soil settling to standards on a portion of the route west resulted in a delay in building the “partial” interchange in the Seven Hills area just west of Toledo.

That bridge overpass will be completed in the spring with the opening of the four-lane west anticipated in June.

Gustafson also revealed on tuesday the cost for the 5-mile Expressway extension is now put at $60 million - $6 million over the original announced price.

The Expressway from M Avenue east of Tama to the U.S. 63 interchange opened on Nov. 1.

Doug McDonald, DOT resident engineer at Marshalltown, earlier told The Chronicle the wet weather experienced during the construction season this year has been a factor in the completing the work, as well.

However, the job was slated to be done in November and the bypass portion appears to meet that goal.
