New beginnings for two area rural Lutheran Churches

August 29, 2010
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald
TAMA NEWS-HERALD - St. John Lutheran Church, rural Tama and Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Malcom, installed their new Pastor on Aug. 15, 2010. Pastor Karen Barkholtz was installed by Julie Higgs. Pastor Higgs is the assistant to Bishop Burk of the Southeast Iowa Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America in Iowa City.

These two rural comminty churches share a pastor. This will be the first call since Pastor Kalen graduated from Wartburg in May 2010. Kalen and her husband, Pastor Tim Dowling were ordained June 22 in Wisconsin. Tom is the new minister at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Tama. This was a very unique situation with the three local Lutheran churches in need of ministers. And a young couple received that call to come to a small community and share with us.

Pastor Barkholtz received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Wisconmsin Eau Claire in education. Teaching four years before the decision to go to the seminary was finally made.

Both churches are very excited that God has lead a very vibrant, warm, inviting woman to our community. New beginnings are coming with Pastor Kalen. St. John Lutheran Church at 1705 380th St., Tama, service is at 9 a.m. Trinity Lutheran Church located on Hwy. 63 near the intersection of Hwy. 6, rural Malcom service is at 10:30 a.m. Come and visit us. See why we are excited.
