The grand opening of the Tama Library’s PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corner will be Wednesday, May 12, at 4 pm. at the Tama Library. IPTV’s Kids Clubhouse celebrity, Dan Wardell will provide a special program while we celebrate Children’s Book Week.
All are welcome to be among the first to see and experience this new interactive learning space.
The Tama Library was one of 50 chosen in Iowa to receive these national resources. The PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corner will provide area kids with new opportunities to read and engage through hands-on activities.
Parents, caregivers, teachers, and kids can all use these resources. The corner is a small, colorful space where kids can feel free to play games on a computer, read a book, or watch an educational and interactive literacy skill-building DVD. And of course, characters from favorite books and PBS KIDS programs are part of the fun.
All activities – including self-directed worksheets, online videos, parent-led activities, and more – are based on an existing literacy framework that has its foundation in the National Reading Panel recommendations, encompassing skills such as letter recognition, print awareness, and vocabulary instruction.
The initiative is part of Iowa Public Television’s participation in the PBS KIDS Raising Readers campaign. This national literacy effort focuses on building reading skills at home, at school, in child care centers, and in the community. -Submitted
