Moves next door to operate Bishop Insurance

January 26, 2010

Steve Bishop says he saw a chance to keep a business in downtown Toledo as well as an opportunity for himself and family when approached by an American Family Insurance recruiter. The company was seeking someone to replace agent Stacy Allers, who was set to take over the Hiawatha, Iowa, agency.

Bishop, who owns and operates a barbershop and electronics retail store next door to Allers, said “I didn’t want to see another hole in main street.”

With that, he attended American Family Insurance School in St. Joseph, Mo., for seven weeks to become acquainted with the new role. There was also a week-long business conference at American Family headquarters in Madison, Wis.

Then, he opened the American Family insurance Steve Bishop Agency in Aller’s location at 107 East High on Sept. 1. This brought about some changes.

Now, his wife, Rebekka, who already jointly operated Bishop Electronics, is more on her own with that business which has a full line of electronics and related gear, U.S. Cellular telephones and Dish Television Network services.

Steve has scaled back on barbering to just Saturday appointments.

In the insurance office, he is assisted by Angie Hill, a licensed office manager, and long-time American Family agency employee in Toledo. The Steve Bishop Agency is a full line offering - auto, home, health, commercial lines, and farm and ranch insurance offered.

Bishop says he likes his new position and said he especially enjoys going out in the field and visiting people.

The agency hours are Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Appointments can also be made.

Bishop has been a barber since 1977. He cut hair in Marshalltown from 1977-1989 and has operated his own shop in Toledo for the past 20 years. The electronics business opened on Sept. 11, 2001, THAT 9-11 which he says is at least a date easy to remember.

Bishop is a member of the Toledo Fire Department.

The Bishops have two children, Mackenzie, and Iowa State University senior majoring in Architectural History and who is employed at the Tama Medical Center and Dylan, a freshman at Marshalltown Community College.
