It can be viewed Monday-Friday from 11-5 p.m. at the Fisher Center. The family lives on the Meskwaki Settlement, west of Tama-Toledo. Ray and stella are well-known for their artistry. Ray is a painter, photographer and writer. Stella is a master beadworker, graphics designer and a crafts vendor for the Meskwaki Casino. They have both exhibited artwork at the University of Iowa Art Museum, Luther College, Decorah, Ft. Dodge Community art Center, Clinton Community Art Center and the Institute of american Indian Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her beadwork can be found in collections of the State of Iowa and Minneapolis Institute of Art. Two of her highly decorative beaded shoulder bags are on the covers of two of Ray’s books - The Invisible Musician and Black Eagle Child. The children’s art includes: Micah Rider Young Bear, six, uses crayons, colored pencils and highlighters and renders forms and shapes which are often spontaneous and abstract; Miko Kipp Young Bear, nine, paper sculptures, drawing and painting, uses discarded cereal boxes or toys; Rosie Marie Young Bear, 11, fabric arts in leather, beads, cloth and charms for decorations; Mina Annabeth Young Bear, 13, painting and drawing on cardstock with collage makes geometric designs; Mark Houston Young Bear, 15, beads, wire and string makes necklaces all of which have been sold except the exhibits which will be kept as heirlooms; and Jesse Daniel Young Bear, 18, colored pencils, markers and pencil draws hearts given to special friends and family members. |
