TAMA NEWS-HERALD - “My wife comes from here, we live here and we saw and see a need for a furniture store,” Brad Maus said Monday upon the opening day of the couple’s new furniture and outlet store in downtown Tama - Maus Furniture and Mattress Outlet. The new store is occupying adjoining buildings at 225-229 West 3rd St. in locations occupied at one time by an expansion of the Bee Hive Department Store, a women’s clothing store and the Candy Kitchen.

The Mauses are not newcomers to the business ––they’ve owned and operated their own furniture store on the Poweshiek County Courthouse square in downtown Montezuma for the past eight years and will continue with that operation, as well. Bobi Maus specializes in decorating and design work for customers. Kim Banes, Elberon, has been employed to work three days a week in the store.

“Having always lived here, my wife was used to Harrison’s and Horbach’s,” Maus said of two long-time furniture businesses which have closed in Tama-Toledo in recent years.

“What we are looking to do is have furniture for the ‘common man,’” Brad Maus said. “We’ll have specials and items for the average consumer.”

In addition to a line of popular-priced furniture, there will be some close-out, slight imperfections and “scratch and dent” items offered at discount prices. The store name includes ”Outlet” for this reason Maus said.

They carry a quality line of Therapedic mattresses and Omaha bedding, Ashley Furniture, Best Home furnishings and Lang Brand Bedroom Furniture. The display areas of the new Tama store has a wide selection of living room and bedroom furniture and accessories. The store also features rugs, lamps, tables and decorative items.

Remodeling including painting, refinishing a floor and lighting were done in the display area.

“There’s no need to travel, We offer the same items ands prices as the big city stores. We can compete with any big box store and here you deal with the owner, Maus said. With the modern “Quick Ship” method, if the store is out or doesn’t have the color or style a customer is looking for, it can be ordered and obtained rapidly, Maus said.

With this ability, Maus Furniture has the ability to carry up-to-date inventory, he said.

Lay-away is welcomed, Mastercard and VISA are accepted and a program with approved credit through GE, six months-the same is cash if offered.

Delivery is available and customers can save money by picking up their furniture themselves.

The Mauses have five children ranging in age from 15-26. Bobi Maus is the daughter of Colene Kent, Tama, and the late Bob Kent.
