On two recent occasions Letters to the Editor from Daun Keefe, Tama, have been published. In each she called attention to what she saw as a hazard at the construction site of the U.S. 63 interchange on the U.S. 30 bypass route in Toledo.

Whether it was her persistence or a danger was recognized by the Iowa Department of Transportation in its own, a change is in store.

‘Mr. Herald Chronicle’ forwarded Keefe’s concerns on both occasions to Doug McDonald, district DOT resident engineer in Marshalltown.

In the first case, he replied the work met safety standards.

This week he emailed this response to the second query: “We are still excavating in that area and will continue to do so over the next several weeks, weather permitting. The contractor will be installing some temporary concrete barrier over the next couple weeks on the northwest corner of the bridge.” - Doug McDonald P.E. Resident Construction Engineer
