Toy drive launched for Marsha Downs Battered Womens Shelter

November 24, 2009
By John Speer, Editor
TOLEDO CHRONICLE - Verlene Horbach, State Farm Insurance agent in Toledo, has begun an effort to collect toys to supply the four-county Marsha Downs Battered Womens Shelter this holiday season. The shelter provides a safe haven for persons and families who are experiencing or fear violence in domestic relationships.

Horbach said the need is great for toys for young people who are temporarily housed at the shelter and the program is very receptive to the toy drive. The collection point will be be Horbach’s office at 128 East High Street in downtown Toledo.

Acceptable items are new, unwrapped toys which of course, must be “non-violent” in nature. No toy weapons or items which suggest violence are acceptable.

Horbach said a successful similar effort by a fellow State Farm agent inspired her to begin this program.

The Marsha Downs Shelter serves Tama, Marshall, Grundy and Hardin counties. The actual location is confidential for the obvious reason of its purpose.

Marsha Downs, a native of Montour and 1968 South Tama graduate, lost her life in a domestic violence altercation in 1990 in Toledo.
