TAMA NEWS-HERALD - The internet is a valuable tool in learning about

what you can do to help the earth as one person

South Tama Elementary students in grades 3-5 learned ‘one person can make a difference’ in conserving our resources last week. They attended a play in their gymnasium entitled “Flashback.” Three professional actors from Minnesota- Michael Brown, Claire Hayner and Adam Qualls - took students on a trip from the future back in time to the present day.

They portrayed the future as a time when humans had to use mechanical devices to breathe and there were no trees, just a “barren landscape.”

The main character, Dax, uses a time travel device to return to today to experience clean air and a landscape as students know it with green trees and blue skies.

By interacting with the students to get their answers, the actors demonstrated some of the things which need to be done to preserve a safe environment. The ideas of reusing and recycling products and proper disposal of material is reinforced by the actors through the scenes. Saving energy by recycling and helping the earth were more themes of the play.

In the play the actors suggested students could use the internet to easily find ways they could be an important part of the effort.

The play was sponsored by the Tama County Solid Waste Commission in cooperation with the East Central Iowa Council of Governments.
