Betty Ann Vavra

Betty Vavra, 79, Montezuma, dided on Oct. 17, 2009, at her home. Services were on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Holland-Coble Funeral Home, Montezuma, with Chaplain Susan Sanning officiating. Interment was Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Grinnell Regional Hospice. Betty Ann Vavra, daughter of Harry J. and Hildred A. (Kucera) Frahm was born on Sept. 9, 1930 in Tama. She graduated from Tama High School in 1948. On Jan. 26, 1951, she was united in marriage to Vernon (Jake) Vavra at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Malcom. To this union six children were born, Michael, Charles, Randall, James, Lisa and Christine. Betty stayed at home raising her children until purchasing the New Sharon Star where she served as the editor for 10 years. Betty then received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from William Penn University in 1980. She taught 10 years in the Farmington School System in Farmington, Mo.

Betty had a passion for music and singing. One of Betty's favorite pastimes was golfing with her husband and family. She loved large family gatherings where she enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family.

Her memory is honored by her six children Michael (Nuan) Vavra of Houston, Texas; Charles Vavra (Gina Brown), Northwood; Randall (Elizabeth) Vavra of Australia; James Vavra (Karla Hawk), Eddyville; Lisa (Steve) Bell, Indialantic, Fla. and Christine (Dennis) Hopwood, Montezuma. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren Brian Vavra, Ranee Vavra and Monica Vavra (Lyle Rudolph), Houston, Texas; Rachel Vavra (Todd Hall), Denver, Colo.; Kelly Brown, Clear Lake; Vernon and Ryan Vavra, Chicago, Ill., and Harrison Vavra of Australia; Jessica Vavra (Bobby Jones),New Sharon; Jamie Vavra (Ben Schelker), Cedar Rapids, Emily Vavra-Scully, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Andrew (Jennifer) Bell, San Diego, Calif., Matthew and Thomas Bell, Indialantic, Fla.; Elliot, Nathan, and Logan VeVerka,, Montezuma, Kelsey and Austin Hopwood, Montezuma. Also surviving are four great grandchildren Elijah and Jacob Rudolph, Houston, Texas; Keagan Cody, Clear Lake; Sylas Schelker, Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Doris Love, Austin, Texas, and Jane (Skip) Shafland, Red Wing, Minn., and several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Vernon (Jake) Vavra.*
