TOLEDO CHRONICLE- When the estate of Ralph C. Turbett was settled recently, several local organizations were beneficiaries of his generosity.

Turbett died Sept. 13, 2008, at Westbrook Acres Care Center, Gladbrook. His will was dated Sept. 29, 2004.

According to Turbett’s niece, Karen Streeter, Marshalltown, Turbett was born in the Tama-Toledo area and lived there through high school graduation. Records show he was a member of the Toledo High School Class of 1929.

Turbett married and lived most of his adult life in Washington D. C. He was a map-maker during World War II and eventually retired from the federal government.

He returned to the Garwin area to care for his aging mother, and stayed there after her death.

“They spent summers here and winters in Florida for several years,” said Streeter. “When he got too old to commute, he stayed here.”

In addition to seven nieces and nephews remembered in his will, Turbett left $25,000 to the Toledo Ambulance, $15,000 to the Toledo Public Library and $15,000 to the City to be used for Woodlawn Cemetery.

“We will probably use this money for additional training for our personnel,” said Toledo EMS Director Greg Johnson.

Toledo Council member Pete Zmolek chairs the Cemetery Committee. “We haven’t had a chance to meet yet to decide what we will do with this money,” he said.

“No decision has been made about what we will do with the money,” said Toledo Public Library director Jenny Bledsoe. “The library board will discuss the matter and make the decision.”

Dollars for Scholars

He also left $50,000 to the South Tama County Dollars for Scholars program and $50,000 to Tama County for the benefit of the Tama County Museum.

Garwin

He also left similar amounts to Garwin organizations. Included were Garwin ambulance - $15,000 to the Garwin Public Library and the Garwin Fire department, $25,000 to the Garwin Cemetery and $50,000 to the Garwin-Green Mountain School District for scholarshoips for college.

The American Red Cross and the Salvation Army in Iowa were also namedd as beneficiaries in the amoutn of $100,000 each.
