Kenneth Mervin Elliott, 47, rural Dysart, was placed on probation for two years and assessed civil penalties totaling $1,250 by Judge Denver D. Dillard in Tama County District Court action. Elliott was found guilty on two counts of child endangerment by a Tama County Jury on April 1 following a two-day trial. He was charged as the result of a personal injury accident which occurred on July 23, 2007 at rural Dysart. It was alleged Elliott was responsible as a guardian for a 15-year-old under age driver who was involved and also responsible for two minor passengers in the accident vehicle. Tama County Deputy Sheriff Chad M. Hansen filed the charges. In other District Court action before Judge Marsha M. Beckelman- Dee Diane Morrison, 36, rural Chelsea, received a deferred judgement, was placed on two years probation to the 6th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services and was assessed a $625 civil penalty. Morrison entered a written guilty plea to a charge of child endangerment filed on Feb. 5 by Tama Police Detective John Carr. According to court records, Morrison left a six-year-old child unattended in a motor vehicle at Roy's Auto on U.S. Highway 63 in Tama. The child reportedly shifted the vehicle into reverse and the vehicle struck a parked vehicle. The child then shifted the vehicle into 'drive' and the vehicle struck Roy's Auto building. Maurice Wabaunasee, 52, rural Tama, entered a written guilty plea to a charge of third offense public intoxication. He was sentenced to 15 days in jail with credit for time served and received a suspended fine of $625. He was charged on May 9 at rural Tama by Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police Officer Chris Knouse. Caleb Jacob Thompson, 22, Tama, entered a written guilty plea to a charge of possession of marijuana. He was sentenced to two days in jail and fined $315. Thompson was charged on May 18 at rural Tama by Meskwkai Nation Tribal Police Officer Scott Brammer. Lori Ann Matejka, 47, Tama, received a deferred judgement, was placed on probation to the 6th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services for three years and ordered to pay a $750 civil penalty. She was also ordered to pay $500 restitution to the victim. Matejka pled guilty on May 7 to a charge of 2nd degree criminal mischief. She was accused by Tama Police Sgt. Jeff Filloon of scratching and spray painting a neighbor's car on Oct. 8, 2008. Simon Lee Buffalo, 28, rural Gladbrook, entered written guilty pleas to charges of 1st offense drunken driving and possession of marijuana. He was sentenced to two days in jail on each count. Buffalo was also fined $1,250 on the drunken driving charge and $315 for marijuana possession. He was charged on April 29 by Tama County Deputy Sheriff Chad M. Hansen on U.S. Highway 30 near 305th Street. Before Judge Mitchell E. Turner- Johnathan Claiborne, 23, Breckenridge, Colo., received a deferred judgement, was placed on self-supervised probation for one year and ordered to complete out-patient substance abuse treatment. He was assessed a $315 civil penalty. Claiborne pled guilty earlier to a charge of possession of marijuana. He was charged on Feb. 24 at rural Tama by Meskwkai Nation Tribal Police Officer Barney Hilbert. |
