TOLEDO CHRONICLE - (SPECIAL) -Abraham Lincoln in Iowa is the subject of the latest Tama County Historical and Genealogical Society's evening program. Grant Veeder, recognized as an expert on the 16th President will be featured on June 3 at 7 p.m. at the Museum, 200 N. Broadway in Toledo. Lincoln has a special place in Tama County history, having owned 40 acres of land northwest of Toledo. The town of Lincoln, Iowa, is in northwest Tama County. The public is invited to attend the presentation in which Veeder will focus on Lincoln and his role in the state of Iowa. The event is part of a two year-long observance of the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth which was mandated by the U.S. Congress. About Grant Veeder: Black Hawk County Auditor Grant Veeder grew up in Boone, Iowa, and graduated from Boone High School in1970. He attended UNI where he earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1974 and a master's degree in history in 1979. Grant has worked for Black Hawk County since 1981 and was first elected county auditor in 1988. He has served as president of the Iowa State Association of Counties and the Iowa State Association of County Auditors, and is on the board of directors of the National Association of Counties. Grant has been interested in Abraham Lincoln since his college days and has enjoyed continuing his studies on Lincoln and his era. He was appointed to the Iowa Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission as a representative of the Iowa State Association of Counties, and on behalf of the commission has been researching the ties that Lincoln had to the State of Iowa. About the Iowa Lincoln Bicentennial Commission: The Iowa Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission was created by the Iowa Legislature in 2007 to supplement the work of the national ALBC in the state of Iowa. he IALBC held celebrations at the Iowa Capitol and the State Historical Building for the celebration's kickoff in 2008 and the bicentennial date in 2009. The commission has focused on Lincoln's connections to the state of Iowa, producing educational brochures and including extended articles on its website, www.IowaLincoln200.org. The commission also endorses Lincoln-related activities around the state, and it is partnering with the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs in a History on the Move traveling museum, which will feature a Lincoln exhibit in its inaugural journey.
