Elberon American Legion Auxiliary gets ready to distribute poppies

May 8, 2009
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The Elberon American Legion Auxiliary met April 16. President Marne Chalupsky called the meeting to order with flags in place. An opening prayer was given by chaplain, Dorothy Hayek. The Pledge of Allegiance and Auxiliary preamble were recited. The Vacant Chair was read, preceded by a moment of silence for POW/MIA's. Officer roll and the March minutes were read by acting secretary, Rae Culp. The treasurer's report was given by Wilma Parizek.

Old business included a report on the March 18 bingo at the Iowa Veterans Home. Elmer and Marne Chalupsky and Lorraine Vileta assisted 135 residents along with other units attending. We furnished $10 in quarters as prizes.

On March 21 we furnished 8 dozen kolaches for the Foreign Food Fair held at the veterans home. Elmer and Marne helped serve. There were 160 residents taking part in enjoying foods representing different countries.

Government Day was held April 8 in Toledo with 114 students and teachers taking part and 32 volunteers helping. Betty Prusha assisted with the noon meal and Lorraine Vileta took part in the tour of government offices.

New business included signing cheer cards for Ray and Della Sweet, Nancy Mahood, Kendra Derby and Marcia Engledue. A thank you card was signed for Donna Banes for pop tabs. We received our small poppies for distribution next month. Have several poppy posters to judge next month that were made by Elberon students attending Benton Community school.

Dates to remember: April 28 Tama County meeting in Toledo. May 14 next regular meeting at 1:30 pm.

Marne read a reading, "Success". With no further business a closing prayer was given and the meeting adjourned. Rae Culp was hostess.
