Event is Sunday

March 5, 2009
Toledo Chronicle, Tama News-Herald

The American Legion Auxiliary of Enright-Schrader Unit 73, Tama, will honor the 90th anniversary of the birth of the American Legion with a potluck dinner on Sunday March 8, at the Post Home in Tama. The social hour will begin at 5:00 p.m. and the dinner will follow at 6:00 p.m. Those attending the dinner are asked to bring a covered dish of salad, vegetable or dessert and table service. The Auxiliary will provide the meat, rolls, beverage and birthday cake.

The event will include the "burning" of the mortgage for the Legion Home at 1105 East Fifth Street. All Legion and Auxiliary members, families and guests are cordially invited to attend.

Several dignitaries will be in attendance to help celebrate the occasion, including Iowa Department Commander Bruce Feuerbach, Iowa Department President Virginia Carter, Third District Commander Dale Lenaberg, Third District President Susan Selk, Tama County Commander Dick Denbow and Tama County President Jolene Denbow.

The American Legion was founded after the Armistice was signed ending the hostilities of World War I. In March 1919, a three day caucus was held where a thousand "Doughboys" helped shape an organization for American veterans. They debated issues, agreed to disregard rank among the membership and drew up a constitution for what is today the world's largest and most influential veteran's organization.
