Chronicle wins state press awards

The Toledo Chronicle placed in two categories in the 2008 Iowa Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. The winners were announced at the annual convention in Des Moines on Feb. 6.

The Chronicle received third place in the Headline Writing division for Weeklies Class 2.

A photo by editor John Speer took second place in the Spot News category.

The photo, which appeared on the Opinion page, showed a protester at an Iowa McCain-Palin rally during the 2008 U.S. Presidential campaign.

The Tama News-Herald also received two awards.

Staker, Star-Clipper

Captures First

Jason Staker, who recently left his position as editor of The Traer Star-Clipper, won first place in the Feature Story division, Weeklies Class 2.

His story appeared in November, 2007, and was entitled "The perfect fit." It told about a family from Clutier who adopted a girl from China. The feature ran during National Adoption Month.
