Listening to you, working for you
One of the most important parts of my job as your State Senator is to listen and be available when you have concerns or ideas for moving Iowa forward.
Throughout the year, I'll keep you up to date on what's happening in the Legislature and in our part of the state, and I welcome your feedback I'll continue sending out newsletters about issues and events that impact local families, businesses and communities. I'll also bring the Legislature to you by holding listening posts in communities throughout our Senate district.
And, of course, you are always welcome to visit your state Capitol in Des Moines, where you can take a tour and meet with me and other legislators about issues that are important to you. If you're planning a visit to Des Moines and would like to schedule a tour of the Statehouse, go to www.legis.state.ia.us/tours.
As always, you should contact me directly if you have questions or concerns. During the week, call me at the Senate, 515-281-3371. On weekends, you can reach me at 641-673-0359.

This week brought both sadness and happiness to the legislators at the Statehouse. The Senate, and I personally, lost a valued colleague in retired Senator Mary Lundby. Although we were not in the same party, Senator Lundby was a gracious mentor to me as a freshman senator. I particularly valued her independent streak and her ability to reach across the aisle. Her advice to me, as a young legislator, was to follow my own best instincts and stand by my principles. I will miss her.
On a happier note, the nation watched with pride as we completed another peaceful transfer of power. The sight of the most powerful man in the world walking with his predecessor to the helicopter and exchanging warm hugs was an image for the world to marvel at. I am proud of our nation's ability to once again accomplish the transfer of power in such an orderly, peaceful manner.
This is a legislative column by Senator Tom Rielly, representing Iowa, Poweshiek, and Keokuk counties, and portions of Mahaska and Tama counties.
To contact Senator Rielly during the week, call the Senate Switchboard at 515-281-3371.
