Debt trend is hopeful

May 24, 2013

To the editor: As a former letter pointed out, it is absolutely correct to be concerned about the national debt. However, there is at least a degree of hope on the horizon....

As TTStew correctly pointed out it is the deficit, not the debt which has recently been trending down. Our debt is currently at $16.8 Trillion and climbing. With record near 0% interest rates we are still spending $223 billion a year on interest payments on our debt. The interest payment alone is more than double the U.S. Education and Training budget according to whitehouse.gov . It's also more than we spend on Veteran's benefits, Science, Space and Technology and Agriculture COMBINED! While the deficit trend is moving in a positive direction we are a long way from solving our debt problems in this country. In the time it took me to type this message we accumulated another $50 million in debt.

I agree that there is a glimmer of hope that the Federal Govt will get spending under control but I hope it is before it's too late. You mention the debt is going down and it is not. What you mean is the annual deficit is going down, but every year as far as the eye can see, our national debt in increasing. As with all debt, eventually the interest can cripple you. The reason we has a small surplus during the Clinton years was because we had fiscal conservatives in Congress that demanded less spending. Another reason the future deficits look a bit better is because tax collections are going up, so the trick will be can we keep the economy going while raising taxes? Economics isn't in our favor as when you tax something (like economic success) you end up with less of it. No matter which side of the political fence one is on, we all need to push for lower taxes and less spending.

Hopefully, our current regeme will stop giving billions to our enemies!

Hopefully, our current regeme will not have another stimulus to spread out to teacher & other unions to garner votes and raise money for liberals.

Hopefully, the current regeme will not pay off more big donors by backing more bogus GREEN projects.

Hopefully, moochelle will stay home for once and realize the county cannot afford her constant spending.

Hopefully, will all the current revalations...the obama MINIONS WILL WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!
